Why run Mastodon from a conversationChatGPT writes, Breakreach publishes.

Mastodon has no algorithm to rescue an irregular account: people see your posts in order, when they open the app. Posting steadily, at hours your followers are awake, is most of what works, and a queue fed from a conversation is the easiest way to keep that up.

Nothing runs on your machine. Once a post is scheduled, it publishes from our servers, so ChatGPT can be closed and your laptop can be off.

Set it up in two minutes.7 steps, once.

What you can post to MastodonAnd how to ask for each.

  • Text postUp to 500 characters on most servers, posted publicly. Your server may allow more; Breakreach's composer counts to 500.Post this to Mastodon now
  • Post with photosUp to 4 photos, shown as Mastodon's grid. A fifth photo onwards is left out.Post it with the pour-over and latte photos
  • VideoOne video. Mastodon processes it before it can be posted, and Breakreach waits up to 5 minutes. A post can't hold a video and photos together, so the video goes out alone.Post this clip to Mastodon with a line about the new blend

Let ChatGPT write the Mastodon postThen say what to change.

Mastodon readers expect a person, not a brand voice, and hashtags are how posts get found, since there's no algorithm. Ask for a plain post with two or three hashtags in CamelCase, so screen readers say them right.

How it did

Likes, replies and boosts for each post, plus your followers and post count. Mastodon doesn't count views. Ask how did yesterday's post do? and the numbers come back in the chat.

Edit or delete it

Until it goes out, you can change anything from the conversation: move it to Friday, change the caption, turn it back into a draft. A failed post can be fixed and rescheduled the same way. Once it's published, the connector can't edit or delete it on Mastodon, and deleting it in Breakreach only takes it off the calendar, so edit or remove a published post on your server, where Mastodon also lets you edit a post.

What Mastodon requiresAnd the limits to know.

  • Works with an account on any Mastodon server: you type the server's address, and you approve Breakreach there.
  • Text alone is fine, media is optional.
  • One video, or up to 4 photos. When a post has both, Mastodon gets the video alone.

ServersAny Mastodon server. You type its address and approve Breakreach there.

What it can't do yet

  • Visibility: posts go out public, never unlisted, followers-only or private.
  • Content warnings, image descriptions and polls.
  • Threads of several posts: one post per request.
  • Reading or answering replies from the chat.

Three things people do with it

  • Post the same announcement to Mastodon and Bluesky, each trimmed to fit
  • Keep a project account alive with a scheduled post a day, written from your notes
  • See which posts got boosted last week and write the next ones like them

A safe routine for a teamDrafts first, then the calendar.

  • Ask for drafts, not postsSay save it as a draft and nothing is scheduled. Drafts land in the Breakreach calendar, where the team can read them, and schedule the draft for Thursday at 9 AM turns one into a post.
  • Review in the calendarEvery Mastodon post, from ChatGPT, the API or the app, sits on the same calendar with its time, account and media. Open one to edit it or move it.
  • Name the brandWith several workspaces, the connector uses your first one unless you name another, so say which brand the post is for.
  • Approve each postSet ChatGPT to ask before it acts (details below), so nothing is published without someone clicking allow.
  • Know when something failsA post that hits a temporary error is retried up to three times over 30 minutes. If it still fails, it's marked failed in the calendar with a notification, and you can fix and reschedule it from the chat.
  • Revoke access anytimeDisconnect the connector in ChatGPT and the assistant can't post any more. Posts already scheduled stay in the calendar until you cancel them.

Using the connector in ChatGPTPlans, confirmations, phones.

  • Which plans have itPlugins from the ChatGPT directory are available across ChatGPT plans, and OpenAI notes that access depends on your plan, workspace, role and region. On Business workspaces apps are on by default and admins can turn them off. On Enterprise and Edu, new plugins stay off until an admin enables them.
  • Confirmations before postingChatGPT can show an approval card naming Breakreach and the action before it runs, with options such as Deny, Allow once or Always allow. You choose the default in Settings → Plugins → Permissions: always ask, allow reads only, allow low-risk actions (the default), or allow all actions for one app. To approve every post yourself, pick Always ask.
  • Web, desktop and phonePlugins work on the web and in the ChatGPT desktop app, and OpenAI's release notes also cover them on mobile and in voice.
  • DisconnectingIn Settings → Plugins, select Breakreach, open the menu on the account and choose Disconnect. Posts already scheduled in Breakreach still go out, so cancel them in the calendar if you need to.

Other ways to post to Mastodon from ChatGPTAnd when they're the better choice.

  • BufferBuffer schedules Mastodon posts from its own app and has an MCP server. Better if you also want Buffer's planning tools. Buffer
  • Mastodon's own schedulingMastodon's API can hold a post for later, at least 5 minutes ahead and up to 25 a day, and some Mastodon apps use it. Better if your app of choice already offers it. Mastodon docs
  • Copy and pasteAsk the assistant for the text, then post it yourself. Free and fine for a post or two, but nothing is scheduled and the assistant can't see how it did.

When it doesn't workThe fixes for what people run into.

  • “This doesn't look like a Mastodon server”Breakreach couldn't find Mastodon's API at that address. Type the server only, like mastodon.social or fosstodon.org, without your username, and check it opens in a browser.
  • The video post failed after a few minutesMastodon processes a video before it can be posted, and Breakreach waits up to 5 minutes for it. A long or heavy video on a busy server can take longer: shorten or compress it, then retry.
  • The post failed with “Mastodon refused the token”Access was revoked in your server's settings, under Preferences, Account, Authorized apps. Connect the account again from Breakreach's Settings; your scheduled posts stay in place.

Short answers about posting to Mastodon from ChatGPT.

No. Scheduled posts publish from Breakreach's servers at the time you chose, so you can close ChatGPT and your laptop.

Yes. Breakreach publishes through Mastodon's official API with an authorization you grant, and you can revoke it at any time. Your password is never shared.

Creating an account and connecting your first social account is free. Scheduling and publishing need a plan, from $29 a month ($23 billed yearly), and you can cancel anytime.

Yes. Ask ChatGPT to save drafts, then review and edit everything in the Breakreach calendar before it publishes.

With a link. The connector takes media as links it can download, such as a file on your website or a public cloud storage link, and copies the file to Breakreach's storage before posting.

Yes. Breakreach registers itself on your server the first time someone from it connects, so mastodon.social, fosstodon.org or your own server all work. Type the server's address, not your username.

What your server lists before you authorize: read your account, and write posts and media attachments. It can't read your timeline, your notifications or your private mentions, and you can revoke it in Preferences, Account, Authorized apps.

Check its rules, since each server sets its own. mastodon.social, for one, asks you to disclose generative AI use and doesn't allow accounts that only post AI-generated content. Breakreach posts what you approve; it doesn't add a label.

No. Each post is sent with an idempotency key, so if a retry reaches Mastodon after the first attempt went through, Mastodon returns the first post instead of making a second.
