The social media inbox API.Instagram, Messenger and X DMs, one shape.
Breakreach's inbox API lists the direct message conversations of your Instagram, Facebook Page and X accounts with GET /v1/inbox, reads any of them, and sends a reply with one POST. Instagram and Messenger take replies within 24 hours of the person's last message, and the API tells you when that window has closed.
Checked against the API code on October 7, 2026. Breakreach is our product.

What is the 24-hour rule?Meta's, for Instagram and Messenger.
Instagram and Messenger let a business reply to a person within 24 hours of that person's last message. After that, a reply is refused until they write again. Breakreach sends standard replies inside that window, and when Meta refuses one, the API answers with a plain reason (“the platform only allows replies within 24 hours of the person's last message”) instead of Meta's error code.
So answer early. A script that checks GET /v1/inbox every few minutes, or an agent asked “anything in the DMs?” in the morning, stays well inside the window.
What does a conversation look like?
Every network comes back in one shape: the conversation id, the platform, the accountId it belongs to, the other person (participantId, participantName, avatar when the network gives one), the last message and its time. Messages carry text, from, isFromMe, a timestamp and attachments.
Conversations are read live from each network. When one account can't be read (an expired token, a missing permission), the others still answer and the failure is listed in errors with the reason.
Do I need Meta's approval for Instagram DMs?Not on Breakreach: our app has it.
Reading and sending Instagram messages through the API needs Meta's instagram_business_manage_messages permission, and Messenger needs pages_messaging, each granted after App Review. Breakreach's app passed that review in September 2026, so you connect an account and call the API. Building it yourself means your own Meta app, a screencast per permission and the review wait.
What does the inbox API cost?
The Developer plan costs $5 a month per connected account up to 20, $3 from 21 to 100 and $2 after that, never per call or per post. The API also comes with every regular plan, from Starter at $29 a month for 5 accounts. Messages read and sent aren't counted.
Agents get the same calls. As MCP tools, no code to write.
From an agent: “read my unanswered Instagram DMs and draft a reply to each” works in Claude Code, Codex or OpenClaw, and the agent can show you the drafts before it sends them.

What the inbox API doesn't do yetSo you know before you build.
- Starting a conversation on Instagram or Messenger: Meta allows replies only
- TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky and Reddit messages
- Sending photos or files in a reply: text for now
- Webhooks for new messages: poll
GET /v1/inbox
The rest of the API (webhooks, workspaces per customer, connect links for your users, the price per connected account) is on the developers page.
Questions, answered.
Short answers about the Inbox API.
Yes. Meta's Instagram API covers messages for professional accounts after App Review. Breakreach's app has that approval, so GET /v1/inbox and POST /v1/inbox/:id/messages work once the account is connected.
No. Instagram and Messenger only allow replies within 24 hours of the person's last message, so the API answers conversations people started.
Instagram, Facebook Pages (Messenger) and X. The other networks don't give apps access to direct messages.
Usually it was connected before Meta approved Breakreach's messaging permission in September 2026, or the token expired. Reconnecting it in Breakreach fixes both.
Yes, through the MCP server's list_conversations, get_conversation_messages and send_message tools. Ask it to show you each reply before it sends.
