Why the studies disagreeDifferent metrics, different accounts.

Six studies, three answers for the hour. That isn't because some are wrong: they measure different things on different accounts. Sprout Social and Hootsuite count engagement without defining it further. Buffer uses the median engagement rate per follower. Later, Dash Social and SocialPilot use engagement rates too, but on very different samples.

  • Sprout SocialNearly 2B engagements across six networks, November 2025 to February 2026. The Instagram share isn't stated.
  • Hootsuite1M+ posts from businesses in 118 countries, across networks.
  • Buffer9.6M Instagram posts, 2024 and 2025.
  • Later6M+ Instagram posts from January to October 2024, so the oldest data here.
  • Dash Social2.2M posts, Reels and Stories from about 1,500 brands, July 2025 to June 2026.
  • SocialPilot7M posts from about 50,000 accounts, February 2025 to January 2026.

Our reading: the overlap is the safest place to start. Midweek afternoons are backed by three studies, Saturday is avoided by five, and the early-morning slots are worth one test slot, not your whole schedule.

How to find your own best time on InstagramA two-week test.

  • Pick three slots from different campsFor example Tuesday 3 PM, Thursday 8 AM and Sunday 11 PM: an afternoon, a morning and a late-night slot.
  • Post comparable content in each for two weeksSame format, so the slot is the only big difference. Don't compare a Reel with a single photo.
  • Compare reach per post against your medianNot raw likes: one post that takes off hides everything else. Twice your median is a strong slot, your median is ordinary.
  • Check when your followers are activeIn Instagram Insights, open Total followers and scroll to Most active times (professional accounts).
  • Keep the winner and replace the weakest slotThen run the test again next month.

Is it different for Reels, carousels and Stories? The studies don't agree here either.

  • ReelsLater (975K Reels) and Dash Social (323K Reels) both find midnight works best. SocialPilot (250K Reels) finds 8 AM to 12 PM, Monday to Thursday. Sprout Social says the windows are the same as for other posts, and Buffer doesn't split by format.
  • CarouselsLater finds 5 AM with Tuesday the best day. SocialPilot finds 7 to 9 AM, Tuesday to Thursday.
  • StoriesDash Social measures Stories by reach and finds weekend early mornings strongest, such as Sunday 2 to 3 AM and Saturday 5 AM.

Best times by industryWhere the pattern changes.

  • RetailWeekdays 12 to 3 PM (Sprout Social), mornings (Hootsuite), 3 AM (Dash Social). The widest split of any industry.

  • Beauty and fashionBeauty at 10 AM and 2 PM, fashion at 1 to 2 AM (Dash Social). SocialPilot finds both do better on weekends.
  • Finance, construction, hospitality, governmentAfternoons (Hootsuite). Sprout Social finds very early mornings for financial services, Wednesday 3 to 10 AM.

FAQ

Timing, answered.

Short answers about posting times on Instagram.

Midweek afternoons are the safest start. Five of six recent studies favor the middle of the week, and Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Buffer put most of their best slots between noon and 10 PM local time. Then test against your own reach per post.

Saturday. Five of the six studies name it the worst day or one of the worst.

Your audience's. All six studies report times in the audience's local time or normalize to it. Instagram Insights shows where your followers are and when they are active.

The studies disagree. Later and Dash Social find midnight works best for Reels, SocialPilot 8 AM to 12 PM on weekdays, and Sprout Social says Reels follow the same windows as other posts.

No, you choose the slots. Save them once as your posting schedule, and every new post opens on the next free one, from the calendar, ChatGPT or Claude.
