Is there an official Instagram profile picture size?
No. Instagram's help on profile photos explains how to add or change one, and gives no size, file type or crop rule. The 320 × 320 most guides repeat comes from a different page: Instagram's rule for feed photos, which it keeps between 320 and 1080 pixels wide, enlarging anything narrower to 320.
Our recommendation is 1080 × 1080. It is the ceiling Instagram uses for feed photos, it leaves room for sharp screens and future layouts, and it costs nothing: the file is tiny either way. Anything from 320 × 320 up works, as long as it is square.

Most of the time, people see your profile picture at 32 pixels, next to a post or a comment. That is the size to design for.
How the circle crop works
Instagram shows the profile picture as a circle cut from the middle of your square. The four corners, about a fifth of the image, never show. Keep the face or the logo inside the central circle with a little margin, because a thin ring is drawn around it when you have a Story up.
A logo that isn't square, like a wide wordmark, has to shrink to fit the circle and becomes unreadable at 32 pixels. Use the mark alone, or the first letter, on a plain background. The resizer's circles show your image at 150, 96, 32 and 24 pixels as you drag it.

Often it isn't your file. On a computer, instagram.com shows the profile picture in a 150-pixel circle using a 150 × 150 image, even on high-density screens that need twice as many pixels to look sharp. The same photo looks crisper in the app.
When the upload itself is the problem: it was a small image, a screenshot of a photo, or a crop of a tiny part of a larger picture. Start from a sharp, square image of 1080 × 1080 with the subject large, and the circle has enough pixels at every size.
How to change your Instagram profile picture
- In the appOpen your profile, tap Edit profile, then Edit picture or avatar, and choose where to take the picture from. Tap Done.
- On a computerOn instagram.com, open your profile, click Edit Profile, then Change photo, and Upload Photo.
- In Accounts CenterAccounts Center, then Profiles, pick the profile and choose Profile picture. Instagram is moving accounts to Meta's Accounts Center, so this path may be the one you see.
You can also import your current Facebook profile picture. Whatever you choose, your profile picture is public: anyone can see it, on or off Instagram, even without an account.
Avatar, Notes and other circles
You can put a Meta avatar on the other side of your profile picture: visitors swipe between the two. A Note shows above your profile picture on your profile, and at the top of the inbox, for up to 24 hours. The circles in the Story tray and in messages use the same picture; Instagram publishes no size for them either.
