Mastodon MCP servers in 2026.No official one, and small open-source ones.
Mastodon has no official MCP server, and its maintainers said in April 2026 they don't plan one. The open-source servers are small, the biggest with 17 GitHub stars: they sign in with an access token or OAuth on your server, and most are read-only until you turn writing on. Hosted schedulers, Breakreach among them, post and schedule from Claude or ChatGPT through Mastodon's own API.

To post to Mastodon from an assistant, use Breakreach. We built it, so here's the case.
Connect Mastodon- Any server: you type it, approve Breakreach there, and the assistant can post
- Nothing to install or keep running, and scheduled posts go out with the chat closed
- It only asks to read your account and write posts and media, so it can't read your timeline or mentions
When to pick something else. Breakreach posts publicly, without content warnings, alt text, polls or threads, and doesn't read timelines or notifications. For an assistant that browses and answers on Mastodon, the open-source servers above do that on your own machine.
The kinds of Mastodon MCP serverHow each one gets to your account.
Open source, with your token
VitexSoftware/mcp-server-mastodon and smaller servers take an access token you create in Preferences, Development, New application on your server. Simple, within the rules, and you choose the scopes, but you run the server and the token sits in its config.
Open source, with OAuth
cameronrye/activitypub-mcp, the most-starred (17 stars in October 2026), and thenavidm/mastodon-mcp-cli register an app on your server and run OAuth from a login command. Both read a lot, timelines, notifications and search, and keep writing behind a switch or a confirmation.
Hosted schedulers
Breakreach, Buffer, Postiz and Typefully host the server and post through Mastodon's API. You approve the app on your server once; the assistant then schedules posts, and they go out from the scheduler's servers.
What Mastodon's API lets a server doThe rules every server works within.
- An app per serverEvery server is its own OAuth provider: a tool registers on each one with POST /api/v1/apps. Tokens don't expire until you revoke them.
- PostingPOST /api/v1/statuses with write:statuses, media first through /api/v2/media: up to 4 attachments, or one video. An Idempotency-Key stops a retry from posting twice.
- Limits500 characters on default servers, more on many. 300 posts per 3 hours per account, and scheduled posts at least 5 minutes ahead, 25 a day.
- Server rulesEach server writes its own. mastodon.social asks for generative AI use to be disclosed and doesn't allow accounts that only post AI-generated content.
What Breakreach's Mastodon tools doAnd what they don't, yet.
What you can ask for
- Text postsPublic posts on any Mastodon server, within its character limit, 500 on most.
- Photos or a videoUp to 4 photos, or one video, which Mastodon processes before it goes out.
- SchedulingAt a time you give, or the next free slot of your posting schedule. Breakreach holds the post, so Mastodon's 25-a-day cap on scheduled posts doesn't apply.
- StatsLikes, replies and boosts per post, plus followers and post count. Mastodon doesn't count views.
Not yet, or not possible
- Content warnings, alt text and polls
- Unlisted, followers-only or private posts
- Threads and quote posts
- Reading timelines, notifications or mentions

What to askThree requests that work on Mastodon today.
- “Post to Mastodon that Morning Light is out, with the pour-over and latte photos”
- “Write this for Mastodon under 450 characters with two hashtags, and schedule it for 9 AM”
- “How many boosts did my last five Mastodon posts get?”

Short answers about Mastodon MCP servers.
No. A request for MCP support was closed as not planned in April 2026, with a maintainer writing that the project isn't interested in facilitating LLM use. Every Mastodon MCP server is third-party.
Breakreach does: it registers on your server the first time someone from it connects. Open-source servers work on any server too, with a token or OAuth from there.
Each server sets its own. mastodon.social asks you to disclose generative AI use and doesn't allow accounts that only post AI-generated content, so read your server's rules before automating.
Not with Breakreach, which only asks to read your account and write posts and media. Open-source servers like activitypub-mcp read notifications on your machine.
In Claude: Customize → Connectors → Discover, search Breakreach, Connect. In ChatGPT: Settings → Plugins, search Breakreach, Connect. In Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http breakreach https://api.breakreach.com/mcp, then /mcp to sign in. Then connect Mastodon in Breakreach: type your server and approve there.
Creating a Breakreach account and connecting your first social account is free. Scheduling and publishing need a plan, from $29 a month ($23 billed yearly) for 5 accounts.
