Watch on YouTubeHow to copy a YouTube video's title and description
- Copy the video's linkFrom the address bar, or Share > Copy link in the app. Videos, Shorts, live streams and youtu.be links all work.
- Paste it aboveThe title and the whole description appear as the channel wrote them, line breaks and links included.
- Copy or downloadCopy the title, the description or both at once, or download them as a .txt file to keep.
The text is the one in the video's original language. If the channel added translations, viewers in other languages may see a translated title and description on YouTube.
Find a video's description without a tool
The description sits under the video. YouTube shows its first few lines, then a "Show more" link on a computer and "more" on a phone (YouTube Help). Open it to read the rest, and on a computer select the text to copy it.
That works for one video. The extractor is quicker when you want the exact text with its line breaks, the length of each field, or the links and chapters pulled out for you.
How long a YouTube title and description can be
| Title | Description | |
|---|---|---|
| Limit | 100 characters | 5,000 characters |
| Not allowed | < and > | < and > |
| What viewers see | Sometimes only the start: keep the important words first | The first few lines, before "Show more" |
One detail: YouTube Help gives the description's limit in characters, while the Data API gives it as 5,000 bytes. For plain English it's the same. Emoji and scripts like Hindi take several bytes per character, so a description full of them can hit the limit before the counter reads 5,000. Our counters count characters as you see them.
What viewers see before "Show more"
YouTube doesn't give a number of characters. It says viewers see the first few lines before they click "Show more", and advises using those lines to describe the video (YouTube Help). Look at how the video you pasted opens: the first two lines usually say what it is, with the main search words, and the links come after.

Schedule a YouTube videoLinks, hashtags and chapters in a description
- LinksThe extractor lists every link in the description, in order, untouched. Whether they're clickable on YouTube depends on the channel: the YouTube Data API documentation ties that to requirements such as channel verification or advanced features.
- HashtagsUp to 3 of the hashtags in a title or description show by the title; with more than 60, YouTube ignores them all (YouTube Help).
- ChaptersYouTube turns timestamps in the description into chapters when the first is 0:00, there are at least three in ascending order, and each chapter lasts 10 seconds or more (YouTube Help). The extractor checks the timestamps against these rules; that check is ours, not YouTube's.
- Automatic chaptersSome videos get chapters YouTube makes itself. Those aren't written in the description, so no extractor can show them.
Can you reuse another video's title or description?
Read them, learn from them, and write your own. A copied description tells viewers and YouTube nothing new about your video, and YouTube's own advice is a unique description for each one. What's worth taking is the structure: how the first lines hook, where the chapters and links go, how many hashtags there are.
Then write yours: the YouTube title generator and the YouTube description generator open on the video's topic when you follow the links under the extractor. For the tags, use the YouTube tag extractor.

100 for the title and 5,000 for the description, according to YouTube Help. The Data API counts the description in bytes, so emoji and some scripts use the limit faster.
Yes. Paste a /shorts/, /live/ or youtu.be link as it is.
Either the description has no timestamps, or the video's chapters are automatic: YouTube makes those itself and doesn't write them in the description.
No. Only public and unlisted videos, with their link, return a title and description.
The extractor shows the original title. If the channel added translations, YouTube may show you the one in your language.
