Instagram DM limits. What Meta actually documents.
Meta documents no daily cap on DM replies. What it does document: a business can only message people who wrote first, within 24 hours of their last message; one private reply per comment, within 7 days, up to 750 an hour per account; and send rates per second. The “50 DMs a day” figures on vendor blogs are estimates for messages sent by hand, with no Meta source.

Is there a daily DM limit on Instagram? Not one Meta documents.
Meta's developer docs don't give a number of DMs per day. They limit who you can message (people who wrote first), when (within 24 hours of their last message) and how fast (calls per second and, for comment DMs, per hour). An account that answers 3,000 people who each asked for a link breaks no documented limit.
The daily numbers you'll find elsewhere are estimates from tool vendors, and they don't agree. Inrō says established accounts “sit somewhere around 50 to 100” before problems start, and adds that “Instagram does not publish a number”. InstantDM's table runs from 10 to 20 cold DMs a day for a new account to 100 to 150 for a Meta Verified one, “based on aggressive split-testing”. Neither cites Meta.
Those figures are about something else: DMs typed by hand in the Instagram app, mostly to people who never wrote to you. That's cold outreach, which Meta's API doesn't allow at all, and which Instagram's spam systems watch with thresholds it keeps private. For automated replies through the API, the documented limits are the ones in the table above.
How many DMs can you send per hour?750 from comments. The rest is per second.
The only per-hour figure Meta documents for messaging is for comment DMs: “Your app can make 750 calls per hour per Instagram professional account for private replies to comments on Instagram posts and reels.” For comments during a Live it's 100 calls a second, and only while the broadcast runs.
Other DMs are limited per second. Meta's Instagram Platform overview says 100 calls a second per account for text, links, reactions and stickers. Its Messenger rate limit page says 300 for Instagram accounts connected through a Facebook Page, and a 2024 changelog entry reads “300 (up from 100)”. Either way, no conversation that a person started comes near it.
The “200 automated DMs an hour” figure that circulates on vendor blogs isn't on any Meta page we read on October 8, 2026.
How does the 24-hour window work?It opens when they write, and closes 24 hours later.
“Your app has 24 hours to respond to any message sent from an Instagram user,” in Meta's words. Each new message from the person restarts the 24 hours. So do a tap on an ice breaker or the persistent menu, and opening your ig.me link on an existing conversation.
- After 24 hoursOnly a person can answer, with the human agent tag, within 7 days of their last message. Meta's reference says “Only HUMAN_AGENT is available for Instagram Messaging”, and reviews the apps that use it. It isn't for automated or promotional messages.
- Ads that open a DMMeta's Developer Policies say a conversation started from a Click-to-Instagram-Direct ad “may last up to 7 days”.
- A commentOpens one private reply, within 7 days. The conversation continues only if they answer it, then for 24 hours.
Who can an automation message?Only people who started it.
- People who messaged you“Only after an Instagram user has sent your app user's Instagram professional account a message can your app send a message to the Instagram user.” There's no way around it on the official API.
- People who commentedOne private reply each. Followers find it in their inbox, others in message requests.
- People who mentioned you in a storyFrom public accounts, and from private accounts only if they follow you.
- Not new followersMeta has no webhook for follows, so no tool on the official API can DM someone because they followed you. More on that.
- Checking if they follow you
is_user_follow_businessworks only after they've messaged you, tapped an ice breaker or the menu. After a comment alone, Meta returns “User consent is required to access user profile.”
What gets an account restricted?Behaviour, more than volume.
Meta's Developer Policies don't put a number on it, but they say what gets messaging limited: experiences that “receive excessive negative feedback, may be feature limited, paused, rate-limited or removed from Platform”. Negative feedback means people blocking you, reporting the message or deleting the thread. A few rules carry most of the risk:
- Messaging people who didn't askMeta requires opt-in before contacting people, and an immediate stop when they opt out.
- Very high frequenciesThe Community Standards on spam forbid posting or engaging “either manually or automatically, at very high frequencies”.
- Engagement gatingThe same standard lists “like/share-gating”: making likes, shares, follows or other public engagement the price of exclusive content. Keep a follow or a comment a request, not a toll.
- Slow or silent botsMeta's messaging policy asks automated bots to respond to user input within 30 seconds, and to offer a way to reach a person.
- Password-based toolsTools that log in as you or click through the app aren't on the API at all, and are the usual cause of action blocks.
How does Breakreach stay inside the limits?Checked in the app and in the API.
In the app
The editor behind DM automations and Comment to DM counts each message against Meta's 1,000 bytes (640 characters with a button), caps choices at 13 and their labels at 20 characters, and keeps waits under 23 hours so the next message still fits the window. Before each message goes out, Breakreach checks that the person wrote in the last 24 hours; if not, nothing is sent and the activity says “24-hour window closed”. Comment DMs stop at 700 an hour, under Meta's 750, and the rest go out the next hour.
With the API
The same checks run on POST /v1/dm-automations and POST /v1/comment-dm-rules: a step over a limit is refused with a 400 that names the step. Runs that hit the window end with the status window_closed, and comments older than 7 days are recorded as skipped with the reason too_old. See the DM automations API and the comment to DM API.
Breakreach keeps your automations inside Meta's rules. Replies only, within 24 hours, and a person always wins.

Are Messenger's limits the same?Close, with a daily formula.
Facebook Pages follow the same 24-hour window, the same one private reply per comment within 7 days, and 300 calls a second for text. Messenger adds a daily formula: “Calls within 24 hours = 200 * Number of Engaged Users”, the people the Page can message, and pauses a Page that sends more than 40 messages a second. Since April 27, 2026, three of Messenger's message tags (confirmed event update, account update, post-purchase update) return an error; the human agent tag still works. DM limits, answered.
Short answers, sourced above.
Meta documents no daily cap on replies sent through its API. It limits who you can message (people who wrote first), when (within 24 hours) and how fast. The 20 to 150 a day figures on vendor blogs are estimates for DMs sent by hand, and none cites Meta.
For comment DMs (private replies), 750 an hour per account on posts and reels, per Meta's Instagram Platform overview. Other messages are limited per second: 100 calls a second per account on Instagram Login.
24 hours after the person's last message. After that, only a person can answer, with the human agent tag, within 7 days.
One private reply per comment, within 7 days of it. More only if the person answers, then within 24 hours.
1,000 bytes of UTF-8 text through the API, which is 1,000 characters of plain English but fewer with emoji or accents. With a button, the text is limited to 640 characters.
Not through the official API within Meta's rules: replies only, inside 24 hours, a way to reach a person. Accounts get restricted for negative feedback, high-frequency spam, engagement gating, and tools that log in with a password.
